Hey Lotus Yoga family! We usually focus on the big battles or the grand sacrifices in the Ramayana, but today I want to take you to a quiet, dusty riverbank. It’s here that we find a small, overlooked moment that offers a masterclass in how we treat one another in a divided world.
When Rama was first exiled to the forest, he met Guha, the king of the Nishadas (a tribe of hunters). In those days, the social gap between a prince of Ayodhya and a forest chieftain was massive. Most people would have expected Rama to keep his distance. Instead, Rama embraced Guha as a ‘dear friend,’ treating him with the same dignity he would show a king.
This story isn’t just about being ‘nice.’ It’s about Radical Connection—the ability to see the divine light in someone who is completely different from you. Here is how you can apply Rama’s ‘leveling the ground’ approach to your modern life:
Step 1: Strip the Titles
In your next interaction, whether it’s with a high-level executive or the person clearing your table, consciously strip away their labels. Rama didn’t see a ‘lowly boatman’; he saw a brother. Practice seeing the person before the profession.
Step 2: Seek Physical Equality
Rama didn’t wait for Guha to bow; he sat on the ground with him. If you are in a position of power or influence, try to meet people at eye level. This simple physical shift breaks down psychological barriers and fosters instant trust.
Step 3: Practice ‘Deep Receiving’
Rama accepted Guha’s simple offerings with genuine gratitude. Often, we are so focused on giving that we forget how to receive. Accepting a compliment or a small gesture from someone else is an act of respect that validates their worth.
Step 4: Expand Your Tribe
Identify one person in your community who exists outside your usual social circle. Initiate a conversation. By widening your circle, you aren’t just being kind; you are expanding your own soul’s capacity for empathy.
True connection begins the moment we stop looking at labels and start looking at hearts.
